Electric Helicopter – “Quiet Mode” | The JetAv Blog by Jack Schweibold
Hitting the Aviation Show Circuit at Tech Expo in Nagoya Japan is Hirobo’s Electric Helicopter. Touted to be capable of speeds up to 100 kph (60 mph) it could have scaled nearby Nagoya Castle with ease, cutting our ladder climbing tour time. Scheduled for delivery in eight years at $375,000, Hirobo sees a bright future for this ship, a two-seater and a drone … the latter squeezing in at $125,000. Coaxial rotors simplify directional control.
The specs remind us of early days in helicopters. Weighing in at 140 pounds dripping wet made me an easy pick for employment over applicants tipping scales above 180 pounds. That weight differential equated to an extra half hour of fuel … the total duration of this new 30 minute electric model.
An early relative, the GEN H-4, sporting 4 10hp gasoline engines (above right) mesmerized ultra-light rotor enthusiasts at Oshkosh and Sun-and-Fun during recent years. Hopefully, the Hirobo Electric will have a better solution to full power off auto-rotation other than a potential ballistic parachute. One big advantage in the need to wait until 2021 for your first flight is that training can be started today with the company’s highly successful RC fleet, easily obtained through their distributors or for a fraction of original cost on E-bay.
