Making the CitationJet Even Better by John Hall | Garmin G1000 Upgrade | The JetAv Blog
The CitationJet became the CJ1 by incorporating various iterations of the Collins Pro Line avionics suite. Two screens were standard (pilot PFD & MFD), and third screen (copilot PFD) was available as an option. Early CJ1 deliveries were all equipped with the CNI-5000 radio package (King Silver Crown) identical to the CitationJet, and later the Garmin 500 series became a popular option. Other than the avionics change and a 200 pound MTOGW increase (to regain useful load lost to manufacturing “weight creep”) The CJ1 is identical to the original CitationJet. The CJ1+ introduced a fully integrated Collins package including radios and autopilot, plus the addition of FADEC engines.
Other than the lack of FADEC, the G1000 upgrade offers a fully integrated avionics solution for the CitationJet similar to the capability of the CJ1+ and new Citation M2. The installation also provides approximately 100 pounds in weight savings over the original CRT and electromechanical system.
The $385,000 G1000 upgrade offers a wide array of standard and optional features:
- Two 10.4-inch primary flight displays (PFD) and a 12-inch multi-function display (MFD) placing all aircraft-systems monitoring and flight-planning functions at the pilot’s fingertips.
- Pedestal-mounted, alpha-numeric keypad that enables the pilot to control the avionics’ functionality from a center console.
- GFC 700 autopilot which features coupled WAAS approaches, vertical navigation, and flight level change (FLC).
- FMS with dual WAAS LPV.
- Class-B terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS).
- Dual integrated solid-state attitude and heading reference systems (AHRS) that can align while in motion, including in-flight dynamic restarts.
- RVSM compliant.
- Digital air-data computers.
- Dual digital audio control panels.
- Target N1 computer.
- GDL 69A with integrated satellite weather datalink and digital-quality audio via XM WX Satellite Weather.
- Garmin SafeTaxi with over 950 U.S. airports to help pilots navigate unfamiliar airports by identifying runways, taxiways, runway incursion hotspots, and hangars, as well as the aircraft’s exact location on the field.
- Garmin FliteCharts with electronic versions of departure procedures, standard terminal arrival routes, approach charts and airport diagrams.
- Optional features include Garmin’s GSR 56 Iridium transceiver, GTS 850 and 820 TCAS I and TAS traffic systems, Synthetic Vision Technology, ChartView and Class-A TAWS.
The STC was developed by Garmin, but owned and installed by Cessna-owned Citation Service Centers. CitationJet owners and operators should contact Tim Cain (tcain@cessna.textron.com) for pricing and scheduling an installation.
As mentioned in my previous article about the CitationJet, Aerodisiac, the CJ already represents a tremendous value in the market and the G1000 upgrade brings the cockpit technology to current production aircraft standards. A significant improvement that adds both functionality and value to an already outstanding aircraft.
