As AIN reported on March 21, Nigeria’s Civil Aviation Authority is expected to issue new regulations governing business and private aviation that will seperate them from the regulations that govern commercial carriers. The new policy is expected to be issued in two or three months and all business aircraft imports are on hold until the new policy is issued. The impetus behind the policy change is to have Nigerians register their aircraft in their own country. There is believed to be approximately 200 business jets operating in Nigeria, but the majority of these are foreign registered, due to Nigerian banking and insurance regulations. The number of aircraft operating in Nigeria today is almost ten times the number that were operating in 2003.
