A Comparison of the new Citation CJ4 to the Citation CJ3
A comparison of the many features and enhancements the Citation CJ4 provides over the CJ3:
Airframe:
- New Swept Wing – 12° sweep:
- 0° Sweep on CJ3
- CJ4 has Ground Spoilers
- CJ3 does not have ground spoilers
- Flaps – CJ4 has larger span flaps and only up, 15° and 35° flap settings as opposed to up, 15°35° and 55° (ground flaps) for CJ3
- CJ4 Aft Baggage larger than that of the CJ3 (6.5 cu ft larger)
- CJ4 Cabin stretched 21” aft of cockpit, longer than the CJ3
- CJ4 has 24”x48” wide door – similar to Mustang Style cabin door- easier entry, CJ3 has tapered door
- CJ4 External Frames maximized to increase cabin floor foot room by two inches each side of aircraft than that of the CJ3
Systems:
- Electrically heated windshield, CJ3 utilizes Bleed Air Anti-Ice for windshield
- Single point pressure refueling and defueling capability (120 gpm@60psig), Single point capability is not available on CJ3
- Essential Bus Electrical system – Power is supplied to ProLine 21 system that is essential for flight including all four displays and autopilot in the event of a dual generator failure. Uses AC power converted to DC power during EMER ops. For the CJ3 when you have dual generator failure select EMER bus operations – 30 minutes operation on battery
- LED Interior/Exterior Lighting
- Digital Anti-Skid Brakes similar on both aircraft
- 3000 psi closed center hydraulic system – provides pressure for center section modulating speed brakes, 1,500 open center system for CJ3.
- Dual zone cockpit/cabin environmental system – 3 Evaporators are located in the cabin, one in the RH Closet, one in the LH Refreshment center and the 3rd in the aft cabin. Provides for increased cooling capability. Separate Pilot fan controls – each crew member to select appropriate fan speed. Only two evaporators in CJ3
Engines:
- CJ4 utilizes newer Williams Engine which is directly scaled up from CJ3
- 3,400 lbs of thrust as compared to 2,820 for CJ3
- 5,000 TBO as compared to 4,000 on CJ3
Cockpit:
- 2” greater legroom than CJ3 cockpit
- DBU 5000 – Database loader – Faster downloads (Available on 2009 and newer CJ3)
- Bose Headset Jacks – STD. STD aircraft comes with Telex headsets at delivery but jacks can accommodate Bose X headsets, option on CJ3
- Enhanced diagnostic system interfaced to the MFD for quick review by technician, STD on CJ4 – STD on 2009 CJ3
- Aircraft Recording System for maintenance – Available on 2009 CJ3
- Integrated Electronic Checklist – integrates the Cabin Briefer Cabin Briefer – STD and integrated into the checklist – provides for automatic cabin briefing if selected, option on CJ3
- Avionics – ProLine 21 with enhanced charts – 4 – LCD displays – only 3 displays on CJ3
- Edge to Edge EFIS displays – STD on 2009 CJ3
- Flap position on EFIS/MFD – Flap handle denotes position on CJ3
- WAAS – STD – STD on CJ3 in 2009
- TCAS II – STD – STD on CJ3 in 2009
- New STD Equipment for CJ4: Collins RTA-4112 Multi Scan WX Radar.
- Previous was the WXR-800 Single Unit, Solid State – X Band Color Radar. The New STD Multi Scan WX Radar is very cool. Has excellent Turbulence identification. Pre-selects tilt angles to provide detection of short, mid and long range weather. Fully automatic mode reduces pilot work load and pilot training. Automatically compensates for geographic and climatic conditions. Very user friendly as has “Smart Scan” Technology incorporated in system.
- On CJ3 WXR-800 is STD.
- Dual Collins Mode S Diversity – Enhanced Transponders – STD – STD on CJ3 in 2009. ADS-B Transmit out only
- Mark VIII Terrain Awareness Warning System (TAWS) Class A system– STD.
- CJ3 has Landmark TAWS – Class B system – Mark VIII option on CJ3
- Cockpit Voice Recorder – STD –
- Provisions only STD on CJ3
- STBY HSI not installed – STBY indicator has heading/altitude/airspeed and engine information.
- CJ3 has STBY HSI
- O2 bottle has manual shutoff on tilt panel

- Pulselites interfaced with TCAS II – traffic advisories will automatically activate the pulse light system – STD Also STD on CJ3
- Maintains 8000’ cabin altitude to 45,000’ (9.03psi). The pressurization control system automatically schedules cabin altitude
- CJ3 has a 8.90 psi differential..
- Tail Flood Lights – STD – Also on CJ3
- Emergency Descent Mode (a Flight Director mode that activates an automatic descent of the aircraft if the cabin becomes depressurized in flight), not available on CJ3
- Crew seat lumbar feature STD on CJ4
Cabin:
- New Armrest design – stowable – out of the way
- new seat not available on CJ3
- Both Moving Map and DVD can be shown on bulkhead monitor as STD. Computer presentations can be displayed on all side ledge monitors and bulkhead monitor
- DVD and Moving Map are options on CJ3
- Currently on CJ3 only AvVisor can be shown on AvVisor monitor and DVDs can be displayed on Rosen Monitor. Both can’t be displayed on same monitor on current CJ aircraft.
- Axxess II Phone – Two built-in Iridium Satellite channels for global coverage in air and on the ground. Multi-channel PBX functions for cabin and cockpit, 2400 data baud rate. One in cabin and one in cockpit – STD Axxess II may provide a platform for broadband in the future.
- On CJ3 Axxess II is not offered. Only ST-3100 offered.
- XM in Cabin – STD comes with Single XM Receivers – option for up to 8 seat receivers
- Single Receiver is option on CJ3 with options for additional
- DVD/CD and 100 GB hard drive capability in Media Center – STD Allows for download storage of photos/personal movies/music on Hard Drive
- DVD available as option on CJ3.
- Hard Drive capability not available on CJ3
- 2 – 10.6” Side ledge Monitors and 1 – 10.6” Bulkhead Monitor – STD.
- Receptacles at each seat and side facing couch for a monitor
