Citation CJ Plus Update – Tamarack Active Winglets Provide Significant Performance Improvements
The engineers at Tamarack are fairly accustomed to seeing their modified CitationJet show significant performance improvements during our flight testing, in terms of both climb performance and cruise performance. A recent example – During a series of flights they made around different parts of the western and southwestern United States, they flew direct from Dallas (KDAL) to Jackson Hole (KJAC) with five people onboard. That’s 918 nautical miles with over 1,000 lbs of payload. To make things even more challenging, that day they also encountered a roughly 50 kt headwind enroute. For a sense of perspective, see the map of our flight path below:
That’s pretty impressive. Consider this: an unmodified CitationJet with the same payload in the same headwind would require just over 2,700 lb of fuel according to published flight planning data. Only 2,400 lb was used on that flight. Theoretically, that’s a savings of 300 lb of fuel. Realistically though, a straight CitationJet without Active Winglets has a gross weight of 10,400 lb, which is insufficient for both the required fuel for the 1,100 nm flight (plus reserves) and the payload they were carrying. Therefore, the unmodified CitationJet would need to make a fuel stop enroute. Assuming that the stop was made at approximately the halfway point, the fuel per leg would be closer to 1,600 lb – for a total fuel burn of 3,200 lb. Thus, the ability to make the flight non-stop saves closer to 800 lb of fuel under realistic operating conditions (not to mention over an hour of time). Keep in mind that these are preliminary results that TAG seen with their prototype airplane – they are still testing and optimizing their design.
Premier Jet’s Citation CJ Plus will include Tamarack Active Winglets, an all new Garmin G1000 cockpit upgrade with WAAS, plus new paint and interior. This offering will provide a very attractive, capable and technologlically current aircraft at a highly competitive price point. An additional plus will be continued excellent support from the Cessna Service Center orginization.
